[mythtv-users] XBOX Implementation

The MythTV frontend has been ported to the XBox. I
would normally direct you to the homepage of that
project, however, it has been down for some time now
(the PHP database was exploited and now the page has
what I would consider strange contents). Instead,
I'll suggest searching the mailing list archives, as
MythTV on the XBox has been discussed a fair amount
before.

Anyway, that said...

1. I have no idea if Xebian (the distro that I use on
my XBox) has webcam support, and I don't know if
GentooX does either. Chances are, it could be done,
since the XBox controllers are just regular USB 1.0
devices. However, you'll need a cable to connect the
webcam to the XBox (via the controller port).

2. I've tried using a regular PC with a few
combinations (PVR-350 TV output, nVidia TV output,
Matrox G400 TV output, Unichrome, etc.), and the XBox
seems to have the best output as the MythTV UI
intended. (That is, no messing around with overscan
settings, the EPG looks like the MythTV screenshots,
unlike the PVR-350, where they overlay the program
guide on top of the playing TV show, minimum fuss
setting it up). After that, I'd have to say the
PVR-350 TV output, followed by Unichrome (although I
do think that the Unichrome XvMC output will get
better over time and surpass the XBox). The XBox is
fairly cost effective as well, unless you're like me,
and you mod it like crazy, thus taking up your free
time and money. :)

3. If you don't need the webcam support (you already
said that you don't need PVR support), then XBox Media
Center (XBMC) (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/) might
be a better bet. It will run smoother than MythTv on
the XBox as well, because it doesn't have Linux
running, which frees up some memory (not as much hard
drive swapping, if any at all).
