[mythtv-users] Black screen with Hauppauge 250

I am a new MythTV user trying to set up my first myth box. I have a
Hauppauge 250 that I bought because I wanted hardware MPEG-2 encoding and I
heard support for these cards was good. I first built and installed
ivtv-0.2.0-rc3c and ran mythtv. When I tried to watch tv through myth tv, I
got only a black screen and errors saying:

QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist
Remote encoder not responding.
QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist
Remote encoder not responding.

over and over forever. If I kill mythfrontend and restarted, trying to
watch TV simply shows a black screen and output:

2005-01-19 11:52:02 Connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of
5)
2005-01-19 11:52:10 ReadStringList timeout (quick).
2005-01-19 11:52:10 Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION:
2005-01-19 11:52:10 Changing from None to None

and after a while goes back to the main menu (not infinite errors).
Stopping and restarting the backend again gives the endless errors. I
downloaded ivtv-0.3.0 and installed it (I tried to make uninstall 0.2.0
first, but no target for that...), unloaded and reloaded all the modules.
Same thing.

I decided to try xawtv to see if the card was working. I get:

This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.9)

`Mplayer /dev/video0` also segfaults out.

I'm at a loss for what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Here's the relevant part of lspci -v:
