This would only apply to recordings that are not going to be able to
autoexpire.   A warning about too much use of no-expire (including
expire disabled) could make some sense.  But otherwise, there is no
such limit.  As long as there are programs available to auto-expire,
and the new programs will auto-expire, it should be able to keep recording
forever -- but forgetting a lot of stuff.
