[mythtv-users] BUGLET: Duplicate messages (explained)

Hi,

I just noticed the duplicate messages syndrome for a number of messages.
And I think I known why it occurs.

My SMTP server at home was rather busy for about an hour processing 50MB+
of lines of data into a MySQL database and at that time may have been
responding just a bit slugish for an external source.

At that time the MythTV mailserver does not wait for the message to go
wrong but is contacts my backup mailserver (actually one run by a friend)
and tries to drop the message there.

Sometimes the original makes it before the backup can process and delivr
the message and sometimes it is the other way around.

In any event it seems the MythTV server is having a timing problem where
it will still be processing a message yet declare it temporary
undeliverable. This effectivly puts more load on the server instead of
lessen it.

I am not enough of a postfix expert to tell you which settings needs to
be examined and perhaps changed to reduce the likelyhood of this occuring
again. But it could do with a wee bit of work to make sure a message is
actually not delivered befor an alternate route it tried.

If someone wants to look into it I have gathered some of the duplicate
messages (both of them) so one can compare them against the logs and try
to find out how to make things better.

Hugo.
