Are you using an nvidia card for tvout?
I had a problem once with Nvidia TVout and Mythtv. Live TV crashes as well
as xawtv.

I finally figured that setting :

Option "RenderAccel" "false"

in /etc/X11/XF86Config restored my live tv.
