It sounds like your remote is working but you're missing an lircrc file for
mythtv, or it's configured improperly.  I can't send you one right now
because I'm at work, but that might point you in the right direction.
You should stop the remote from controlling the cursor, it'll make strange
and annoying things happen in the background. To do this, comment out the
following line in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4-xbox
InputDevice     "LIRC-Mouse"
