Just curious, has anyone seen any cheap, small amps that take a coax signal
in (or standard mini jacks) and will decode ac3/thx in addition to just doing
regular 2 or 4 channel audio.
Why? Well you can get cheap 5.1/6 channel speakers sytems for about $50-$100
eg
http://snipurl.com/e61c
which makes it worthwhile to use with an extra frontend (and crt tv) you may
have around the house. Most folks I know may have a nice home theatre setup
in one room, but won't say replicate this in the bedroom or the den or what-
have-you as it's not cost, or space effective to have 42" plasma screens and
a super super surround sound system in each room..
So the point would be to have an amp that can use the coax connector from the
frontend's motherboard (or addin soundcard) to decode ac3 when watching dvd's
and allow 2 or 4 channel stereo when listening to music. I know a lot of
soundcards offer this, however sometimes the output is so low, you need a
preamp anyways....
Most of the cheap speaker systems only have stereo mini plugs and don't take
coax directly.
