You could be right that your card is failing, but I know that I've
sometimes had problems where recordings would get very choppy if one
of the database tables was corrupted.

I don't remember if I noticed that the table was corrupted by running
mythfrontend and mythbackend with the '-v all' option, or if it was
showing up in my syslogs, but the messages were pretty obvious.
