do I dare ask?

does it somehow relate to the fact that with a mailinglist, the owner
has complete totalitarian control over who can and can't be a member
but with a newsgroup it's generally an anyone-can-post type of setup?
(although I'm pretty sure you can have locked news servers iirc)

too bad gmail isn't smart enough to let me log into more than one
account at a time. I could by mythtv-jeff, ivtv-jeff, etc etc, and
just browse them like my own personal forum! (gmail does color
people's names in conversation threads, so it's almost like having an
avatar, right?)
