I'm just guessing here, but I think the problem may be your qt-mysql package. 
Myth interfaces with mysql using qt-mysql, and the error message you're

...says QMYSQL3 was unable to connect, not Myth.

Try rebuilding qt-mysql, looks like maybe its built against your distro's 
mysql, and *does* possibly hardcode the socket location, or more likely, has 
a hardcoded path to my.cnf, which might not be /etc/my.cnf (I'm not all that 
familiar with qt-mysql, dunno exactly how it gets that value). You might 
simply try searching for another instance of my.cnf on your system.

Or like someone else said, just symlink /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock 
to /tmp/mysql.sock if you really don't want to mess with it anymore.
