I'll second that... I had a difficult time with replies until I figured 
out that threading is done by tracking one of the 'hidden' (with most 
mail programs) mail headers.  If you reply to a digest (or if you try 
to reply to a message you read in the web archive by composing a new 
message), the message header will not correctly indicate the ID of the 
message you're replying to.  The best option, as Jarod said, is to 
subscribe to the list in non-digest mode.  This way you will receive 
all posts as individual messages.  As a side benefit, if you have a 
decent mail client the messages will show up threaded.

If you're adventurous, you could try subscribing in MIME digest mode... 
there are a few mail clients that will correctly reply to the enclosed 
MIME-encoded messages (I believe KMail will do this), but of course you 
lose the ability to have a threaded message display.
