Placing the inline amp first is the correct thing to do. Once the signal is
lost due to the losses in things like splitters and long cable runs it
cannot be gotten back with an amplifier. The amp will only amplify noise. So
the best bet is one mounted right on the antenna or where the cable comes
into your house. If that is a problem, put it as close as possible. Before
any other devices. For your use I would suggest something with 10-20 dB of
gain.
