I had similar problems and ended up picking up a Leviton 3x8 
splitter/amplifier.  Works like a charm.  You may want to get one 
that can pass IR commands, because jumping the IR over the 
splitter/amp adds a lot of loss.   I didn't do IR over coax when I
picked up 
my leviton unit, and now that I do, I've found I had to add another 
amp in from of the splitter/amp, pretty much right at the point of 
entry into my house.
