Ignore the extension.  It doesn't mean anything.  The files are
MPEG2.

IIRC, WMP doesn't come with an MPEG2 coded, so WMP doesn't play
MPEG2 files unless you add an after-markent MPEG2 codec.

No, they're mpeg2 format and will play fine using xine,
mplayer, or any other decent video player.
