I had problems with 1.0.3 and 1.0.4. I never tried 1.0.2, but I would
imagine difficulties with it also. As soon as I went to 1.0.5a problems
went away. Tried 1.0.6 and 1.0.7rc2 (and 1.0.7 CVS versions) and had
problems again. We are gaining on it, but for now the safest bet is to
go with 1.0.5a. You can download source packages from
http://alsa-project.org.

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.5a.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.5.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/alsa-utils-1.0.5.tar.bz2

I do have some patches which improves ALSA support for the newer
versions, but we are in the middle of working on a large audio update
right now.

HTH,
David
