I've been running everything as root so far, just to make sure nothing
fails because of permissions.

Here's the output of "dmesg":

Linux video capture interface: v1.00
saa7146: register extension 'dvb'.
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:01:06.0[A] -> GSI 18 (level, high) -> IRQ 201
saa7146: found saa7146 @ mem dfae6000 (revision 1, irq 201) (0x13c2,0x0002).
DVB: registering new adapter (Technotrend/Hauppauge PCI rev2.1).
Technotrend/Hauppauge PCI rev2.1 adapter 0 has MAC addr = 00:d0:5c:21:a6:cc
gpioirq unknown type=0 len=0
DVB: AV7111(0) - firm f0240009, rtsl b0250018, vid 71010068, app 8000261c
DVB: AV7111(0) - firmware supports CI link layer interface
av7110(0): adac type set to 0
videodev: "av7110" has no release callback. Please fix your driver for
proper sysfs support, see http://lwn.net/Articles/36850/
saa7146_vv: saa7146 (0): registered device video0 [v4l2]
av7110: found av7110-0.

And this is the output of "ls -la /dev/dvb/adapter0":

ul16s002 adapter0 # ls -la
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 ..
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 1 Jan 1 1970 audio0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 6 Jan 1 1970 ca0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 4 Jan 1 1970 demux0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 5 Jan 1 1970 dvr0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 7 Jan 1 1970 net0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 8 Jan 1 1970 osd0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 0 Jan 1 1970 video0
ul16s002 adapter0 #

So, I suspect there are no permission problems when running as root,
what else can I try to narrow down the problem? I managed to get the
firmware loaded, which removed the "no such file or directory" and
replaced it with "could not open card #0".

I'm sure I'm missing something really stupid, so I'd be grateful for any advice.

Best regards,
Albert.
