I use a USB-UIRT for receiving.  Lirc supports it with a patch and the

I use a MyBlaster serial for changing channels on external receivers.  
http://www.mytvstore.com/product_id_004.html  Solves a great problem 
that you need to heavily hack lirc if you want to support two devices.  
It doesn't need lirc.
