The files do indeed need to be owned by whatever user is the backend is
running as (or at least, the user needs full r/w). You're using Fedora Core,
yes/no? The way RH chowns devices based on the logged in user makes it
impractical to run the backend as anything but root, without doing some
hacking. This has been covered in the past, please search the archives for
details.
