Do I need any special drivers to support the Mpeg video decoder?

You can use GentooX, yeah.  If you prefer though you can just use strait
Gentoo.  It is supported in the latest livecds.  I actually did a Gentoo
install with the same disc I installed Gentoo on my computer with. 
Everything is the same.
