Yes, I do have a pvr-350.  It turns out that all I needed to do was:

Rename the file from .nuv to .mpg

I had an extra confusion factor going for me here.  The video file was
created on the Slackware box, but I was accessing them with players on a
windows box, through a Samba connection.  All the media players on the
windows box were telling me the files was unrecognizable, but the real
problem was permissions.  I copied the .nuv file to the windows box and
all is well.
