[mythtv-users] dvd:// missing

I am a noob and am just getting my first box going so be gentle (only
the weather works currently).  In the process of building the box I
had to use a cdrom to start building the box and then upgraded to have
a dvd player.  Now that I have the player installed, I have not been
able to figure out how to get the command

mplayer dvd:// 

to work.  It works if I set it to

mplayer /dev/dvd 

but am baffled as to how to set the dvd://.  

running gentoo 2.6.9

And my /dev/cdrom is symlinked to cdrom -> /dev/cdrom/cdrom0
And /dev/dvd is symlinked to dvd -> /dev/hdd

fstab:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0

permissions are 666 for /dev and /mnt 's
