[mythtv-users] Problem watching tv

As a last resort I tried compiling MythTV 0.16. The Gentoo ebuild fails with
some strange error but the version from the site compiles without a hitch.
Now I've updated the database and added my cx8800 tuner to the program
(thought reinstalling might help) but still no luck. Now I get a 'decent'
error message only problem is that I don't have a clue how to fix it:

The default format was RTJpeg or something like that using mp3 for sound. I
switched it to mpeg4 using uncompressed sound but neither set of options
work. They all stop with the same error.
Can anyone tell me what MythTV is doing wrong?
