I've been using the digial output on this card without problems.  I am 
currently using ALSA:spdif, however, I also had it working using /dev/dsp

Since I configured it so long ago, I don't remember if there was any 
settings to get it to work.  I think, at most, there was just an 
adjustment to the mixer settings.  I can look into it further if you are 
having problems.
