Good to know!  That little red exclamation point has been bothering me 
too, but I will now redouble my efforts to ignore it, or use apt-get 
to do any upgrades.

As for my other questions, in the absence of any other suggestions, I 
guess I will ignore the mplayer issues for now, and I'll go ahead and 
re-update my kernel & see if I have better luck afterwards with lirc.
