For the X10 remote, 

I got this combo working, the X10 remote just worked for me. 
I pluggen in the reciever, and apt-get installed lirc. 

# apt-get install lirc-kmdl-`uname -r`
# apt-get install lirc 

started up the service

#/sbin/service lircd start

used irrecord (follow the on screen intructions) to make the 
x10 configuration file, then moved it to /etc/lircd.conf

used irw to confirm button pushes, then map the keyes in a 
lircrc file in ~/.mythtv/lircrc

worked like a chram!
