The machine we were using last night was a year or so Dell P3 laptop of
some sort.  I'm not sure of the speed.  Since the PC isn't encoding the
stream, seems to me that the only important factor is making sure the hard
drive can write all the data.  The video seemed to record ok, but it wasn't
able to play it back at full speed.  Weren't the folks with the pcHDTV
cards saying you needed something faster than a 2GHz machine to play 
back HDTV?

Anyway, the spare parts I have will only suffice for a proof-of-concept:
750 MHz Duron, old-old nVidia PCI graphics card, 40gig hard drive, etc.
He's looking for any solution that gives Tivo-like functionality for
HDTV; if I can get something working with this box, he'll probably
splurge and buy a machine that would do the job.
