Hello,

After my issues with the PVR350 TV-out[1], I decided to use my video
card and a computer monitor, and test that out.

Reliability generally has increased[2]; however, I encountered some
issues. I suspect these should be easy to solve for someone more
familiar with this stuff then me...


1. screensaver. I was watching TV, and suddenly the monitor turned
off, and I had to plug a keyboard in to re-enable the
screen. Yuck. The obvious solution would be a call to "xset s off
-dpms" after starting X but before running mythfrontend. However,
there are times when a screensaver would be good, ie. when the display
is showing the mythfrontend menu for hours on end.

Has anyone considered interfacing MythTV with the screensaver?
eg. this could be down with 3 programmable commands: 1. disabling
screen saver when watching video, 2. re-enabling screen saver when
going back to menu. 3. reseting timer when received input from IR
controller. Such a setup could presumable work for both the built in X
screen saver as well as xscreensaver.


2. sound. If the PCM volume is 0 I don't get sound. If it is any
non-zero value, I get full volume. Adjusting the master volume control
in ALSA works fine. Adjusting the volume in MythTV correctly adjusts
the PCM volume control. Is this a problem with my built in sound card?

Using ALSA[3] snd-intel8x0 driver. It would be nice if I could get
this going, but not essential.


3. tv-out. I tried with nvidia-glx drivers, PAL/Australia output, but
I always get unacceptable flicker no matter what I have tried. I
suspect I am always getting non-interlaced mode, and this is causing
the problems, can someone confirm/deny? How do I fix this problem? Can
anyone confirm PAL-B is correct for Australia?

I have tried suggestions from:
<URL:http://www.sr20.org/dvb/> (with slight changes
                               as I am using the non-free GLX driver)
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx/README.gz

There are other things I have tried and commented out in the config
file.


4. Font sizes. Fonts are far too big on a computer monitor, and far
too small on a TV monitor. I don't know why it is different on
both. Changing the font size settings to extreme values under "Setup"
"Appearance" has no effect.


Notes:
[1] Which I am sure will eventually get fixed...

[2] I have had two crashes, one where the front end exit for no good
reason, another time happened simultaneously when the power failed...

[3] Actually I am getting confused here, I compiled and installed ALSA
drivers, and everything except MythTV appears to use it as
ALSA. MythTV continues to say OSS.
