Several of us user an IR keyboard and learning remote control.
If they are compatible, you can "learn" the standard myth keys
on the appropriate buttons for the remote. This way you can do
anything from either the remote or the keyboard through the same
interface. No LIRC needed.

The trick is that not all remotes can learn from any keyboard.
I use "Marantz RC2000 Mark II" remotes and LiteOn "Airboard"
keyboards. These work just fine. However, in testing some other
cheap learning remotes, none for them were able to understand
more than a handful of keys.

The Airboard is by far the best IR keyboard I've used. However,
I also have a Chicony keyboard that almost any learning remote
will seem to understand.
