Got it!!!!

I had the symbolic link for libglx.so, but the log was still showing an
error about "fail to load GLX"

I googled it, and came across an nvcheck.sh here:

http://lhl.linuxgames.com/nvcheck.sh

the script went through and found all my problems (like 4 in all). wrong
versions of libGL.a, etc. Also some libs were in
/usr/lib/nvidia-graphics-1.0-4363/ instead of /usr/lib/

after I got to the point that nvcheck.sh said all was good, openGL
worked great!

all sypmtoms are gone (woohoo!)

Thanks everyone.
