Scratch all that!  Although it would still be good to see exactly what 
you did to make the digital out work on the Audigy, I managed in one 
last hurrah to get my AC97 codec optical sound output working with 5.1 
sound.   (It's an Asus P4PE motherboard and an AD1980 chip, in case 
others search for this info.)

mplayer wouldn't do 5.1 output if I specified -ao alsa9:spdif, or any 
other -ao option in fact.  When I had those options set, I would just 
get the left and right stereo outputs -- no centre, left rear or right 
rear channels.  However mplayer will output the 5.1 sound if you just 
give -ac hwac3, as an argument.  In short, I had the right argument, I 
just had too many things specified.  My current mplayer command line 
setting is:

mplayer dvd:// -cdrom-device %d -fs -zoom -quiet -monitoraspect 16:9 -vo 
xv -ac hwac3,

No -ao option whatsoever.
