Nada.

I just rebooted (without via_v4l_drv), and modprobe'd it. It then gave:

==========================
[drm] Initialized via 1.3.0 20040411 on minor 0: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8623 [Apollo CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics
==========================

On starting X it still gave the aforementioned "V4L disabled" error, and
the following things went into dmesg:

==========================
gpgart: Found an AGP 2.0 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 4x mode
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 4x mode
drivers/usb/input/hid-input.c: event field not found
==========================

(I think we can safely ignore the hid error - it's probably the USB
remote header complaining ... it's the only USB device plugged in).

Redoing your requested commands, this is what dmesg shows:

==========================
[drm] Module unloaded
[drm] Initialized via 1.3.0 20040411 on minor 0: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8623 [Apollo CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics
==========================

v4l-info still fails with the same error, and I still get the "V4L
Disabled" error :(

The kernel I just built (more closely matching epiawiki.org) was a
little ill ... not happy with devfs, so I'll try another rebuild without
devfs.

I'm still rather baffled :(

Cheers
