I think this is what I'm going with for the first model:

pic-an-lcd compatible
LCDproc compatible
Turn PC on/off via IR
UIRT2 compatible

Front Panel:
20x2 Backlit LCD (or HD44780 compatible display)
6 Keypad buttons

Expansion Slot Cover (back of PC):
3 IR emitter sockets
1 IR receiver socket

Internal Connections:
5 General purpose I/O pins (one open collector output)
One USB connection
