[mythtv-users] FC1, jarod's guide, atrpms, 0.15.1, Unexpected MYTH_PROTO_VERSION

Hi all.  Starting from a fresh Fedora Core 1 install, using jarod's 
guide and updating/installing with atrpms.  PVR-250 set up and working, 
mythbackend starts up okay.

However, when I run mythfrontend (or mythweb) and try to watch TV, I get:

Connecting to backend server: 192.168.1.4:6543 (try 1 of 5)
ReadStringList timeout (quick).
Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION:
Changing from None to None

[root at cappy1 log]# mythbackend --version
0.15.20040525-1
[root at cappy1 geech]# mythfrontend --version
0.15.20040525-1

Any ideas?  Couldn't find anything useful in the archives.

Mythweb gives me this output:

User Notice at /var/www/html/mythweb/includes/mythbackend.php, line 122:
Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION: Fatal Error at 
/var/www/html/mythweb/includes/mythbackend.php, line 17:
Unable to connect to mythbackend, is it running?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
