Ok.  The problem with the bad aspect ratio during playback of VOBs seems 
to be related to anamorphic widescreen dvd's.  Full screen ones seem to 
work fine.  Is there a setting for the ripper that needs adjusted to 
compensate for anamorphic widescreen?  Thanks for the suggestion, 
Jason.  I gave it a try, but it didn't seem to help.
