Folks,
A friend gave me a Iomega DVD+RW drive: hdc: ATAPI 32X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive,
2048kB Cache, UDMA(33) Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20 libata version
1.02 loaded.
This drive works fine in all respects save one. Playing a CD with the smallest
scratch makes MythTV freeze up. For instance on one of my CDs at the last
track, Myth Music always freezes at 2:28. Other discs freeze at different
points, but the results are always repeatable. Skipping over the troubling
spot allows the discs to play on.
Playing a cd in MythMusic drops my memory available from around 463 mB to
around 400 mB.
After a Cd stops reading properly sometimes I can move the selector bar around
and sometimes Mythmusic is completely frozen. If I kill it and go back in and
try to play a disk the sound is very choppy. Rebooting X does not resolve
this, nor does restarting ALSA. If I reboot the system all is fine till it
gets to that spot in the disk again.
This also happends when i try to play a disk with Freevo (mplayer), but not
with kscd (cd player app included with kde). However, arts is turned off so
kscd produces no sound. An alsa buffer issue then? If so why did it not
happen with the old drive?
I suspected the cache on the new dvd drive as my Pioneer 104s did not exibit
this behavior. However the cache on the Pioneer is only 256k and the cache
on the new iomega is much larger as i printed above.
Could this new drive just be more sensitive to scratches? If so, why? If that
is the answer why does this not happen in kscd?
Any ideas? I called iomega but they were no help (i made the mistake of
mentioning Linux and they shut me down).
Thanx all,
Bearcat M. Sandor
