You can also use irexec from the lirc package to
execute whatever you want from the remote.  See the
docs, but basically you run irexec as you do irxevent,
and configure the behaviors in .lircrc.  I use it on a
combined myth/desktop box to wake up the screen from
power save and switch between myth and the regular desktop.
