You need to select LVM as a module into the kernel configuration and
recompile everything, install, etc.

Also, you will need to lvmcreate_initrd. For this, you will need to
install the LVM2 tools. For Gentoo: emerge lvm2 and make sure you don't
have the lvm-user tools installed (unmerge them if it's the case, they
are for LVM1 which doesn't work at all with 2.6 kernels).

BTW, did you upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 or you installed a brand-new 2.6
system? You may have some issues with the device-mapper as well.

You may wish to consult the Gentoo forum and discussions on this issue
with LVM2, since it's rather related with the distro than with MythTV.
