thanks for all the info guys., much appreciated.

i've downloaded the 2.6.7 source from kernel.org and done:
make menuconfig
make
make install_modules
make install

reboot, and there it was in grub :-) everything is working fine, and i've 
reinstalled the nvidia driver too. now i've just got to wait for the my pvr 
250 to arrive and i'll sort out ivtv. is it necessary to get the 
ivtv-firmware package? or is the 
http://ivtv.sourceforge.net/CVS-LATEST.tar.gz enough?
