So, just toss a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local that says : 

mtd


??

Because you're not running mtd.  Try:

ps -efw | grep mtd

And if you don't see any process running, you need to start mtd before
requesting a rip.  Generally, you will want to start mtd with your init
scripts so it's ready when you are.
