In essence...

The backend is the process that interacts with your capture cards, makes recordings and streams data to ...

The frontend is the bit the user sees.  It is basically the user interface and knows how to display video/audio/whatever that it gets from the backend.  

Sometimes the backend and frontend may be on the same machine, sometimes there's a network link between them.
