You can. I use a keyboard aswell (at least for the moment). It seems a
little pointless to go to that trouble when there is a GUI that allows
you to change these "hotkeys".

The benefit of the USB remote is that you could (I assume) get out your
USB IR keyboard and use it with the IR sensor that is already plugged
in.

I could well understand using (or building) another remote sensor if
this remote didn't work. Is it truly not possible to specify
key-combinations in mythweb (or even in the relevant SQL table)?
