I followed Robert's howto that you probably saw:

Actually I needed to recompile the kernel, but not install it, just to
be able to compile lirc. So it works with your kernel. but with Robert's
solution I am using different modules and a different daemon.
BTW I did post a request on the lirc mailing list earlier.
Maybe there could be a link to Robert's HOWTO on Jarod's HOWTO? It's a
pretty good document.
