   Hi, I've got somewhat of a similar problem - cant get anything better
than 720x480 (ATI8500 -> DVI -> hitachi 57" HDTV). I believe the 640x480
is default when X cant find any other resolution to use. From what I
have read, with the research Ive pulled off, is that what ever you can
manage in Windoze with the powerstrip you can get under X - all you have
to do is convert it to XFree86 modeline style. I think I read that the
latest version of the strip does this for you. If not, its not that hard
to figure out, do some searches on google with HDTV and powerstrip or
something with Linux in the search and you should come across some hits
with the windows timings, linux and powerstrip - and then figure out how
to convert from there.
   Anything you find out, Id be interested in knowing too ;-)
