There was a patch a few weeks back to help with this. There is a kernel patch to add (I forget the exact name/details?), but something like an O_STREAM param to the open call which prevents the kernel from caching the recordings, and hence wasting disk cache on these large files.
I have no idea on the details, just remember seeing it on the dev list
