[mythtv-users] Transcoder question

Working on a Myth-box, mostly for the TV recording capabilities.  I've worked out the initial
issues (major sound hiss fixed, auto-login, cron for mythfildatabase) thanks to most of the posts
and docuementation.  But I seem to be going round in circles with the automatic transcode
question.  I've searched through the archives and I'm sorry but it's just making me more confused.
 Basicly:
1. Does automatic transcoding work (via mythtvbackend)?
2. What processes need to be running for automatic transcoding to work?
3. Where does one set the options (sample rate, format) for automatic transcoding?
