file is a little utility that will tell you information about common
file types (usually based on file header info)...  for example:

  file some.gif
  some.gif: GIF image data, version 89a, 289 x 90

  file uppercase.pl
  uppercase.pl: a /usr/bin/perl -w script text executable

Useful for some stuff, but it's obviously only as smart as its
programmers make it, and apparently doesn't recognize the nuv header:

  file 1013_20031123230200_20031124000500.nuv
  1013_20031123230200_20031124000500.nuv: data
