[mythtv-users] TV out with Hauppauge PVR 250 + some other questions

Hi all

I am almost done with setting up my MythTV box, with a PVR-250 (earlier
issues I had with really jerky video were fixed when I installed the
GATOS ATI drivers). I just have a few more issues:

- getting the remote to work. I suspect the transceiver cable
may be defective, because the remote is sending IR signals, and the lirc
side all looks right, but irw shows no events :-(

- getting mplayer to show anything other than the main movie of
a DVD. I don't know if it can even do this (i.e. show the main menu and
allow other selections)

- getting TV out to work

As far as the last is concerned, I was hoping I could use one of my two
ATI All-in-Wonder cards (Radeon 7500 and Rage 128). However, it seems
the GATOS drivers don't support TV out on the Rage 128 and I couldn't
get Myth to display video with the Radeon 7500 (although I could run
mplayer from an xterm okay). So I'm kind of stuck. I now have two
options it seems:

- buy a nVidia GeForce that has TV out and hope I get that to
work

- send back the PVR-250 (bought from J and R, who were
cheapest) and order a PVR 350 from New Egg (J and R don't sell them).

Each of these options is likely to cost another $50-$60, so I want to
make sure I do the wiser one. So a couple of questions about using the
PVR 350 approach:

- does it support recording a TV channel at the same time as
playing back a recorded file?

- Does it work well? Does it need special resolutions/depths
for the X server to work?

Any advice would be welcome, including comments from those successfully
doing TV out with nVidia cards.

BTW I saw the Asus DigiMatrix today. Wow. It's really tempting (about
$400 now) but doesn't seem like it's quite right for Myth yet. It uses
TitanTV.com for its program guide, which may be an alternative source
for xmltv.
