What does

     rpm -q --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}.rpm\n' kernel

say? Maybe you installed the kernel for the wrong architecture (athlon
or i586 instead of i686)? The match must be strict.

apt _should_ have installed the right kernel.
