 That would only happen if you connected it directly  to the line coming 
in your house.  However if you plugged it in like this then you shouldn't
have a problem (obviously there are a ton of ways to do this based
on your particular setup):


				Computer------> Modulator
							|
							|
     Cable from CableCo --------|            		|
				|			|
				|			|
				|(in)			|(out)
				Splitter(out)-------->(out)Reversed Splitter
				|(out)			|(in)
				|			|
				|			|
			Cable Modem		 Wire to rest of house.


 Remember, a backwards splitter is a combiner so the splitter above the 
modem is plugged in normally while the one combining the moudlator signal
and the wire from your cable co go  in "backwards" and the signal from the Modulator wont be passed backup to the Cable Co. :)

 And if were really paranoid you could pick up a frequency blocker, put it on
the line coming in and then use that channel.
