I've done the upgrade myself and had no problems.  If the backend isn't 
running: /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start
Did you check the log to see why the backend was crashing?
/var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
You can also start mythfrontend in an xterm.  This will print output when it 
crashes.
